Over 100 years ago no less of a literally figure than Ernest Hemingway himself put a bug into Joseph Houle’s ear. It would have been soon after the First World War while writing as a young journalist for the Toronto Star when Hemingway discovered the French River which very well may have kindled his life-long passion for fishing and the great outdoors. We can imagine the conversation between Hemingway, who of course would become a giant of English Literature, and Joseph Houle, with what we can only imagine would be a thick French accent:

“Hey Joe, great spot you have here, why don’t you do something with it so you can make some money and others can come and enjoy it?” and Joe, ears perked by both possibilities, replied “Great idea Ernie, prends une hache” to which Hemingway replied “I’m a journalist Joe, not a lumberjack!” Or maybe Ernest took the axe and Joe showed him how to use it.
